Why did Judge resign?

People are speculating as to why Judge Robertson resigned from the FISA court. some think he is protesting the president, which makes very little sense to me.

In my opinion, his resignation would make a lot more sense if he had been the source for the NY Times. As Musil points out in the link above, he has a record of slimy partisanship for Democrats.
